Stockett’s The Help and The Audio Book Experience

0

So over the summer I enjoyed a couple books. The first was Eat, Pray, Love, by Elizabeth Gilbert. I wanted to read the book before seeing the movie. I loved the book and have yet to see the movie.

The second book was Kathryn Stockett’s “The Help”. I decided to get the audio book for this one, which was a whole new experience for me. Loved it! I know many of you are with the times and already know how handy audio books can be. If you haven’t tried audio books I highly recommend that you do.

I mean really, you have to appreciate the convenience of books on CD; enjoy your story while doing dishes, using the toilet, air-flight or whatever. Smile. And if you find a good book with a talented audio book voice actor (or whatever they’re called), it can be better than watching it on the big screen.  And what’s even better, I got the audio book from the public library.

The Help

This book was great! The story took place in Jackson, Mississippi during the civil rights era. Now when the main character, Skeeter, decides to write a book about the realities of being a black maid in the south, Abileen (who is one of the maids) knows that they are risking their lives by getting involved.

I loved the characters. I loved the plot.I was disgusted but not surprised with how degrading these families treated the same women that cooked their meals and raised their children. And this was just less than 40 years ago. Talk about behind times!! You would have thought slavery hadn’t ended. Now we all know that there was a lot going on with racism and inequality in the US at the time (still is), but Mississippi is one those places that just seem to have a problem catching up with the rest of the world. Gesh! Catch up Mississippi!!!!

Anyway, I heard that some readers were offended by the dialect used by Stockett. Some saying it was exaggerated and unrealistic. I wouldn’t know because the audio version was captivating.
